Lesson III: Plant Constituents, Actions, & Uses

Lesson 3 of the Herbal Materia Medica Course dives into understanding what plants are made of, how those components work in the body, and how we can use them effectively and safely.

At the heart of this lesson are plant constituents—the chemical compounds that give each herb its unique properties. These include familiar groups like alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids, essential oils, and mucilage. Each class of constituents influences the body in different ways, and learning to recognize them is a bit like getting to know the “personalities” of plants. For example, tannins can be astringent and tightening, while mucilage soothes and coats tissues.

While understanding active constituents can help offer insight into the plant’s actions, isolating one constituent from the rest does have a different effect on the body than the whole plant, and in the holistic approach it is important to consider the synergy of the whole plant.

You’ll also explore herbal actions, which describe the broad physiological effects herbs have, such as adaptogens that help the body handle stress, nervines that calm the mind, or diuretics that support urinary elimination. Understanding actions enables you to move beyond memorizing “this herb for that problem” and into crafting thoughtful, individualized formulas.

Finally, the lesson ties everything together by discussing practical applications. Once you grasp the interplay between constituents and actions, you can better predict how an unfamiliar herb might behave, evaluate its potential uses, and select the best preparation method to preserve its most valuable qualities.

In short, Lesson 3 equips you with the building blocks for deeper herbal practice—blending science and tradition so you can work with plants more skillfully and intuitively. It’s the point where herbalism begins to feel less like following recipes and more like speaking the plants’ language.
