Herb Walk: Morningside Nature Preserve

Located just a few miles from Midtown, this 30-plus acre patch of woods feels like a world away—complete with winding trails, a suspension bridge, and even a sandy little creek bank locals affectionately call the “dog beach.”

What makes Morningside Nature Preserve special is not just the scenery, but the story behind it. Back in the late ’90s, the land was on track to become another residential development. Instead, neighbors banded together with conservation groups and raised the funds to protect it. Thanks to their efforts, today it’s one of the city’s most beloved green spaces—a true community win.

The trails themselves are short and sweet, a couple of easy miles that wind through shaded forest, meadow clearings, and along the South Fork of Peachtree Creek. The suspension bridge is a highlight, offering a great photo-op before you drop down to the water’s edge. If you bring your dog, chances are they’ll make a beeline for the creek—this is one of Atlanta’s favorite canine hangouts.

Wildlife lovers won’t be disappointed either. It’s not unusual to catch sight of deer moving quietly through the trees or hear a chorus of birds overhead. It’s quite the oasis for herbalists as well, with tremendous swathes of elder, mulberry, lemon balm, and mountain mints. It’s also one of my favorite times of year to hike and forage as late summer fruits start to ripen and the ever-so-slightly cooling temps and heavy rainfall produce the first flush of autumn mushrooms.
