Herb Walk: Blue Heron Nature Preserve

One of the many Blue Herons that call the preserve home.
We’re in the thick of a heat dome here in Georgia—mid-90s and humidity to match. Long hikes are off the table for now, but I still wanted to get out and see what’s blooming.
I headed to Blue Heron Nature Preserve, tucked into Atlanta’s North Buckhead neighborhood. It’s a beautiful mix of trails winding through 30 acres of woodlands, wetlands, riparian zones, and meadows. Beyond its natural beauty, the preserve supports conservation efforts, educational programs, public art, and even a food garden for those in need.
Late July is a bit of a lull in the herbal calendar. Most of the spring and early summer blooms have faded, and the late-summer berries and medicinals aren’t quite ready. Still, there’s always something worth noticing if you take the time to look.
